E-Book Readers and the Single-Device Paradox
There is no doubt that all media is going digital. And while I think it will remain possible quite far into the future to curl up by the fire with a good book, it will be much more likely that it will be some form of electronic book reader that will be keeping you warm instead. If you've not seen these, think of them as .mp3 players for words and illustrations, and many can also play those .mp3s. A few examples of products available now include the Sony Reader Digital Book, Amazon's Kindle, and Hanlin's eReader. These mobile devices are optimized for this function, and, despite US$300+ unit prices, can be quite economical in operation. They tend to be much larger than PDAs (hardly pocket-sized) and have excellent screens that are visible even in bright sunlight. E-books are cheaper than paper books, arguably more convenient to use, and just think of the savings in trees and shelf space. The Kindle will even deliver e-books (and some blogs, newspapers and magazines, as well as Wikipedia) to you via Sprint's EV-DO wireless network. It's not the Web, but how cool is that?
Despite all that, however, I'm not going to conclude here that there's an e-book reader in your future. In fact, I think it's unlikely that the e-book reader, at least as presently conceived, will ever be very successful at all. And this reason for this is our old friend the single-device paradox. Most people just aren't going to carry yet another device. They most certainly do want to read books and other publications, but they want that function on the handset they have to carry anyway. Another thing to lug, power, and manage? It's not going to happen very often. I'm still dealing with the three to four mobile devices I usually travel with - way too much already, and this set doesn't include a camera (other than the one in the phone, which isn't too good), an .mp3 player, a movie player, or an e-book reader.
And thus it remains fair to continue to ask if we can ever really build a single plastic pal who's fun to be with, a mobile personal communicator that really can do it all. The example of Star Trek comes to mind here. You may recall they had the tiny communicator badge for voice, and the handheld tricorder for data - two separate mobile devices aimed at different missions. Well, if they haven't solved the single-device paradox 400 years from now, what chance do we have? But that doesn't mean we can or will go crazy with lots of purpose-built point solutions. So while I will concede that there will be some successful e-book readers, largely resident with, somewhat paradoxically, the stay-at-home, only-very-locally-mobile types, most of us will expect and require this functionality on the personal communicator handset of our choice. The naturally device-independent interface between e-media and the player/viewer/whatever device demands such a solution.

Population Density Dictates Broadband Service Quality
We have discovered a direct mathematical correlation between population density and broadband access quality. We both recently spent time in the wilds of Montana and Maine, and noticed that local broadband speeds were noticeably slower than on our home turfs in Massachusetts and Virginia. As it turns out, moving from the 3rd and 14th most densely populated states in the union to those ranked 48th and 38th explained the difference.
The Communications Workers of America (CWA) just released their second annual survey of US consumer broadband access performance. The survey is a byproduct of the Speed Matters website where you can test your Internet connection's upload and download speeds, and CWA records test results by zip code. This is a valuable service and a welcome addition to the general knowledge base about the Internet. You can find the report here.
The news headline takeaway from the CWA and similar studies is that the US lags ominously behind the rest of the industrial nations in providing adequate Internet access to its citizens. Our takeaway is different—densely populated states stack up relatively well against the rest of the world, while sparsely populated states are like third world countries.
Mathematical Relationship between Population Density and Broadband Quality: The CWA report provides median upload and download speeds for all 50 states and we found that state speed rankings follow population density rankings almost exactly. In fact we were able to derive the following simple formulas to predict access speed:
Upstream Bandwidth (Kbps) = 335 + Population Density (people per square mile)
Downstream Bandwidth (Kbps) = 4.7 x Upstream Bandwidth
So you can see that bandwidth is directly related to population density. Yes, there are some exceptions like Connecticut that should be twice as fast given its population density. But overall the formula has an error of +/- 20%.
It doesn't take much to figure out what is at the heart of this relationship—economics. Wiring a region for fast broadband Internet access requires a huge investment, and an enviable return on that investment is easier when buyers are packed cheek to jowl than when they are a day's ride apart as in Montana and Maine.
If you plug the population densities of industrial nations like South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Israel, Singapore and most of Europe into our formula, you get access speeds four to 40 times that of the US. If we are right that population density drives Internet access economics, then the US will always trail about three-quarters of the world's countries unless we take legislative action.
The "leading" countries are often cited as beating the US in the bandwidth race due to their "national Internet policy". Although policies may have helped, we postulate that their population densities are a bigger factor—so we shouldn't just copy another nation's policy. A national US bandwidth policy must be unique because our rural characteristics are unique.
But we've been down this path before with rural electric and telephone service build-outs. Addressing the economic imbalance underlying Internet service quality discrepancies will require something akin to the rural electrification and universal telecommunications access programs that lit up and connected

If you plug the population densities of industrial nations like South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Israel, Singapore and most of Europe into our formula, you get access speeds four to 40 times that of the US. If we are right that population density drives Internet access economics, then the US will always trail about three-quarters of the world's countries unless we take legislative action.
The "leading" countries are often cited as beating the US in the bandwidth race due to their "national Internet policy". Although policies may have helped, we postulate that their population densities are a bigger factor—so we shouldn't just copy another nation's policy. A national US bandwidth policy must be unique because our rural characteristics are unique.
But we've been down this path before with rural electric and telephone service build-outs. Addressing the economic imbalance underlying Internet service quality discrepancies will require something akin to the rural electrification and universal telecommunications access programs that lit up and connected
Upgrading to SQL Server 2008 – a pleasant surprise!
In my previous post, I was a bit critical of the latest version of the Upgrade Advisor. Well, after going through that painful process, I proceeded onto my upgrade from SQL Server 2005 to 2008 using the "in-place" method. I was pleasantly surprised how smooth the transition was. And everything seemed to work after the upgrade. Awesome! I knew Katmai would deliver...
There are a couple choices when upgrading: Migration vs In-place Upgrade. The migration path allows you to install a fresh instance of the latest release and then to copy databases over from the legacy instances to the new instance. The Copy Database Wizard is the easiest method to use. However, Detach/Attach and Backup/Restore work just as well. The Wizard, however, wins my vote because it prompts you to also copy Server level objects such as Logins which would have to be done manually using the other methods. Migration is attractive if you want to start with brand new hardware and a brand new configuration. The downside is that the clients will need to be updated to point to the new server after the transition. If things go wrong you can always revert to the old installation. The in-place upgrade may be attractive where the same hardware will be used and the upgrade is required on all databases at the same time. If the upgrade is judged to be low risk, then an in-place upgrade may be chosen. In the case of upgrading SQL Server 2005 to 2008, the new release is evolutionary not revolutionary, using the same architecture so an in-place upgrade may be a common choice. Just make sure you have a good backup of the server in case things go wrong! If you are upgrading from SQL Server 2000, you may choose to purchase new hardware and go the migration route because of the significant differences. As always, it depends on your situation.
I chose to perform an in-place upgrade on my server after reviewing the output from the Upgrade Advisor. Not many serious issues except some of the deprecated features which I can take care of later. I ran the upgrade using the install program against my SQL Server 2005 SP2 instance. I had to make sure my Windows Server 2003 was up to SP2 also before proceeding as the install checks for that. It also installs the .NET Framework 3.5 as a prerequisite. The upgrade took around 30 minutes and required a reboot. I tested SQL Server Management Studio against my databases and all looked good. I used Excel 2007 to access one of my upgraded cubes using Analysis Services and that worked too. I launched Reporting Services and my existing reports continued to work as designed. Business Intelligence Development Studio launched Visual Studio 2008 and I was able to open my Report Project successfully (after a minor conversion process - still worth making a backup, just in case). I modified some existing RDL's using the slick new Report Designer (which has been improved immensely over the early CTPs). I even updated one of my reports to include the new Dundas feature of dynamic scalebreaks and it worked like a charm. Very cool.
My confidence has been restored in Microsoft technology! I am now excited again to be teaching SQL Server 2008 to our early adopter clients. What a difference a day makes!

While Asterisk IP PBX software can be a boon for cash-strapped businesses that need phone upgrades, the free, open source platform has also spawned a host of for-profit vendors that charge for Asterisk professional services, peripherals and software extensions and still manage to undercut the prices charged by more established IP PBX vendors.
Digium, the business founded by Asterisk creator Mark Spencer to capitalize on his PBX, says it plans later this year to release a new version that will support much larger deployments. New Jersey-based service provider VoicePulse plans a hosted PBX service based on Asterisk deployed on virtual servers.

Despite its impressive array of partners, Asterisk is still a minor player in the PBX world, says Matthias Machowinski, an analyst for Infonetics Research.
In research his firm did a year ago in which 240 businesses were interviewed, just two said they used Asterisk-based gear, he says. “I would think it’s a small part of the market,” he says.
